Silo Sounds 'Community Classical Music Mentoring Program'

SILO SOUNDS presents 6 mentoring programs a year.

Our SILO SOUNDS performers are also professional educators and musicians. As passionate teachers and players of music they naturally strive to pass on their love of music to the local children. Our region is not easily accessible for top-end classical performers and every guest to our region is valued, so SILO SOUNDS has created a mentoring program as an extension to our concert recital series. Every artist is invited to stay-over in one of our beautiful accommodation options and spend an extra day teaching and workshopping with the children of our twin townships of Harden Murrumburrah. We mainly work with children from the local public schools and preschool.

Concerts For Our Children

Transformative Change

Since our inception in 2022 we have presented world-class concerts and workshops to over 1400 pairs of ears (in our towns’ population of 2000). The public school band program has expanded from 6 to 35 children now applying to learn music. Their beginner-recorder-group is thriving and the children recognise classical instruments and know a little about how they work, what is a string, wind and percussion instrument, how a piano works. Through a generous donor (Melbourne based music-shop in 2024) we secured ex-rental-instruments for school-children.

Making Music From Found Objects

We have expert designed lesson plans featuring everything from the phenomenology of music and expression through to the simplest of concepts. We use lots of movements and encourage freedom of verbal self-expression. Previously, very few children had an opportunity to do this. We are also branching out to engage emerging classical composers working with technology and instruments in combination.

Concerts For Our Elders

Recently we’ve expanded our program to the towns’ elders, performing to residents of the Harden Grange Nursing Home and Flexible Care. The benefit of classical music for well-being and enrichment are well acknowledged. Our elders love  our performances and have asked for more contact with live classical music. The performers donate this extra time in town and CASP and Bendigo Bank sponsorship has enabled us to cover extra accommodation and some expenses for the tutoring.
